The Awakening of Conviction in the Heart of Belize
In Orange Walk, Belize, where faith is often passed down as tradition, Vanessa Rivera grew up knowing Jesus in name only. In a social environment where youth face the challenge of finding a solid identity amidst economic hardship, Vanessa felt her faith was a hollow label.
At age 16, while pursuing her university studies in Biology and Chemistry, she attended a Christian camp just for fun, never imagining she would find a moment of clarity so profound it would rewrite her future forever.
During the camp, Vanessa had a personal encounter with Jesus that transformed her faith from a concept to a real and burning conviction. However, as her faith began to take root, a new tension emerged: how could she connect her faith with her vocation? “I felt an internal fire, an immense desire to serve others,” Vanessa shared, “but I lacked the form—the way to turn that longing into real and effective service.”
The Spark of Cultivate
Her genuine willingness and prayers for answers finally materialized through her pastor, Manuel Guardado, who introduced her to Cultivate by OneHope. This is more than just a leadership program; it is a holistic equipping journey designed to help young leaders anchor their identity in Christ, develop strategic leadership skills, and design a practical mission plan to reach their generation. For Vanessa, Cultivate was the bridge she desperately needed; it was the catalyst that took her from simply wanting to serve as a volunteer to becoming a full-time professional dedicated to the Kingdom.
Cultivate not only gave her leadership tools, but also transformed her relationship with Scripture. Her Bible study began to be filtered through a lens of purpose and practical service. By deciding that her leadership would stem from her identity in Christ, Vanessa developed a deep passion for the Great Commission and for reaching the next generation in a way that was real and lasting instead of superficial.
From Student to Mentor: A Radical Transformation
The change in Vanessa was evident: she moved from uncertainty to an unwavering confidence. This transformation was put to the test when she began working at Children’s Cup, a Christian non-profit that provides caring communities and faithful mentorship to build resilience, spark hope, and empower vulnerable children to rise above their challenges.
There, she met a 7-year-old girl marked by shyness and family struggles. The “old” Vanessa might have only helped with homework, but now she began using biblical words of power: truths about identity to minister to others.
Applying what she had learned, she ministered with authority, instilling security in the girl’s identity: “You can do it,” Vanessa would tell the girl. “And the best part is that you will also be able to help other children.”
A Testimony of Redemption and Equipping
Vanessa’s story is just a glimpse of what’s possible when a young person is fully equipped. Thanks to Cultivate by OneHope, what began as a quiet spark in a young leader in Belize is now lighting the way for hundreds of children. Proving that when identity in Christ is matched with the tools to lead and serve with excellence, transformation doesn’t just happen—it multiplies.
