Growing up in the Philippines, Neil Alejaga was surrounded by faith from an early age. While his father worked overseas for most of his childhood, his mother and grandmother faithfully raised him, modeling sacrifice, perseverance, and devotion to God. Church attendance was a regular part of family life, and Neil spent much of his childhood in church programs.
Yet despite growing up in a Christian home, his faith remained largely external.
At 14 years old, Neil accepted Christ, but as he entered his teenage years, other pursuits began to capture his attention instead. Longing for acceptance and significance, he became consumed by drinking, unhealthy relationships, lustful behaviors, and an addiction to video games that often led him to skip classes. He bullied others, misused his parents’ money to impress classmates, and found himself chasing popularity and approval at any cost.
“I knew about God, but I did not truly walk with Him,” Neil recalls.
While these choices won him acceptance from many of his peers, they left him empty and unfulfilled. Behind the appearance of popularity was a growing dissatisfaction and the painful realization that he was hurting both himself and those around him. Though he drifted far from God, the Lord never stopped pursuing him.
At 19, everything changed during a youth camp. There, Neil was reminded of God’s love and grace in a way that brought him to a breaking point. He realized that God’s love had never been absent—it had been waiting for him all along, patiently calling him home. In that moment, he prayed, “Lord, I’ve wasted my life for many years chasing things that will never bring fulfillment, things that are not aligned with Your will for my life. From now on, let my life be for You only.”
After that camp, Neil was discipled in his church and began serving in campus ministry, eventually taking on roles as a service director and sound engineer. What began as a personal surrender became the start of a new calling as God began shaping his life for ministry and using his story to reach others.
“The same grace that restored me is now the message I carry to the next generation,” Neil says.
A Calling He Couldn’t Ignore
As Neil began growing in his faith and seeking God’s direction for his life, an unexpected opportunity would help shape his future.
While attending a Christian conference in Singapore called Kingdom Invasion, a minister prayed over him and shared a prophetic word: he would lead the next generation. At the time, Neil viewed it as a simple word of encouragement. But as he continued seeking God, the message stayed with him.
The calling eventually led Neil to enroll in seminary, where he began preparing for ministry. During his studies, his senior pastor introduced him to OneHope’s Cultivate Internship Program. Cultivate helps young adults grow as Christian leaders through practical ministry experience, mentorship, and intentional discipleship as they pursue God’s mission in their own culture and context. Neil was accepted into the first Cultivate cohort in the Philippines and across the Asia Pacific region, first launched in 2018.
What began as an internship soon became a defining season of growth.
Through Cultivate, Neil worked alongside churches and ministry leaders, helping conduct OneHope trainings such as Children’s Ministry 101, Book of Hope distribution training for schools, and Values Education training—equipping churches to reach the next generation. As he listened to pastors and leaders from different communities, his perspective expanded beyond his local church.
“It made me realize that the Kingdom of God is far bigger than my local church,” he says. “When churches unite for one mission—reaching and discipling the next generation—we can create lasting impact.”
Shaped to Serve the Next Generation
The internship challenged Neil in unexpected ways. Balancing seminary studies, youth ministry responsibilities, family commitments, and internship work stretched him beyond his comfort zone. Through the experience, he learned to lead with excellence, communicate effectively, and think strategically about ministry.
More importantly, he discovered a deep burden for the next generation.
“I was once that distracted teenager,” Neil says. “I was once that young person who needed clarity, direction, and truth.”
After completing Cultivate, Neil joined OneHope full-time. Over the following years, he served as a Field Coordinator and later as Digital Strategy Coordinator, helping churches and ministries reach young people both in person and online.
The work was both exciting and challenging. In the digital space, Neil and his team had to find ways to reach young people amid the constant noise and competition for attention online. There were seasons when engagement seemed low, and conversations showed little immediate fruit. Yet rather than becoming discouraged, the team remained committed to prayer, continued refining their strategies, and trusted God to work through every interaction.
Over time, they began to see remarkable breakthroughs. In a single year, OneHope’s digital ministry connected with more than 100,000 seekers online. For Neil, however, the impact was never primarily about numbers.
“Every message represented a real person,” he says. “Every conversation was an opportunity for someone to encounter hope.”
At the same time, God was opening doors in local communities. Years earlier, Neil’s church had struggled to minister in schools because they lacked the resources and programs needed to engage students effectively. Through OneHope, that changed. His youth ministry became actively involved in bringing God’s Word into campuses, including a large Book of Hope distribution that reached more than 6,000 students in a school that had previously been difficult to access. Hundreds of students responded to the Gospel through the initiative.
For Neil, moments like these were reminders of God’s faithfulness. The young man who once searched for meaning in the approval of others helped introduce young people to the hope he had found in Christ. What began as a burden for the next generation had become a calling he lived out through his work—seeing lives transformed as young people encountered Jesus, both online and in person.
A Life Multiplying Hope
Today, Neil serves as the National Director of OneHope Philippines while continuing to invest in youth ministry. He also completed a Master’s Degree in International Family Ministry through Southeastern University in Florida, further equipping him to serve children, youth, and families.
“When I was 19, I thought passion alone was enough,” he says. “Today, I know that passion must be grounded in strategy, teamwork, and long-term discipleship.”
Through Cultivate, OneHope, and his studies, Neil’s understanding of ministry has deepened. What once felt like separate tasks, evangelism and discipleship, now feels like one continuous journey. He has learned that reaching young people is not simply about delivering a message, but about creating opportunities for genuine encounters with Christ and walking alongside them as they grow in faith.
This conviction shapes how he leads today. Beyond reaching young people, one of his greatest joys is seeing others step into leadership. Several young people he has mentored have become Cultivate interns, with some now serving on staff alongside OneHope Philippines and the Asia Pacific team. Neil is currently leading a country strategy in the Philippines projected to reach 2.2 million children and youth this year, as part of a broader goal to reach 19.2 million young people across Asia Pacific.
Looking ahead, Neil dreams of seeing every young person have meaningful access to the Gospel and every church equipped to disciple the next generation. His desire is simple: to help raise generations who are transformed by God’s Word and radically committed to Jesus and His Kingdom.
Looking back, Neil sees God’s faithfulness in every chapter of his story. The grace that pursued him as a distracted teenager is now being multiplied through the lives of young people he serves and mentors. What began with one life surrendered to Christ has become a story of hope passed from one generation to the next.
