In a Hard-to-Reach Nation, Leadership Can Start With a Cup of Tea

For Ivan, one of the clearest signs that he was becoming a better leader was surprisingly simple: he started offering people tea.

In a Muslim-majority nation where Christian ministry often happens quietly through trusted relationships, 19-year-old Ivan was learning how to live out his faith and influence others well. He was involved in his church’s youth ministry and led a small group of his peers. 

Then a four-day OneHope leadership intensive challenged what he thought leadership was really about. The program was Lead Today, developed in partnership with John C. Maxwell’s EQUIP to help young people grow as leaders through biblical character and practical leadership principles.

For Ivan, the experience became much more personal than another leadership course.

“For me, this intensive was not just training, but a real inner transformation,” he shared. “What impacted me the most was the idea that leadership is not about insisting on your own opinion, but about caring for the people around you.”

That realization forced him to look beyond what he knew and examine who he was becoming.

“I realized that you can have a lot of biblical knowledge, but without character it bears no fruit. Throughout the training, this was emphasized again and again: everything begins with the heart of a servant.”

When Leadership Becomes Personal

Ivan began noticing the difference in ordinary moments.

“After the training, I began to relate to people differently, with more care, more patience in disagreements, and less attachment to my own preferences,” Ivan said. “Even in simple things, I now try to show attention, to serve, and to help. I listen to people, ask what they think, and look for ways to help them. Even if it is about offering them some tea.”

The gesture may be small, but that is exactly what makes it meaningful.

Ivan was discovering that leadership doesn’t always begin on a stage. Sometimes it begins by listening. By choosing patience. By noticing what someone else needs. By putting another person before yourself.

“This has been the main result for me: not just new knowledge, but inner change that is already impacting my life and my ministry.”

From One Leader to 65 Teenagers

The transformation didn’t stop with Ivan.

He returned to his youth home group and began sharing what he had learned, not only through the lessons he taught but through the way he treated people.

Then the circle widened.

Ivan went on to lead three Lead Today groups for approximately 65 teenagers at his church, equipping them with the same biblical leadership principles that had challenged him. Those young people also received materials they could share with friends and classmates, giving the lessons an opportunity to travel even farther.

In a place where sharing faith publicly can be difficult, this kind of multiplication is especially powerful.

One young leader develops the heart of a servant, invests in dozens of teenagers, those teenagers carry what they are learning into their own friendships and classrooms, and slowly, leadership rooted in the character of Christ begins to spread from one life to another.

Ivan’s story is a reminder that developing the next generation of Christian leaders doesn’t begin by giving young people bigger platforms, but by shaping their hearts.

Because before leadership is about how many people follow you, it is about how faithfully you serve the person right in front of you.

Sometimes, that starts with a cup of tea.
