From Fear to Purpose

For Diego, the sound of his mother’s footsteps arriving after an exhausting shift was the signal of a fragile truce. She worked tirelessly to support the home, while his father lost himself in the abyss of alcohol. For Diego and the children of Balcones del Sur, Puebla, this area of Mexico is full of painful contrasts.

In an area plagued by violence, insecurity, and poverty, people are desperately searching for answers, leading some to the occult practice of Santa Muerte. Despite being condemned by Christian churches, many followers believe it offers protection and strength to those who feel powerless.

The pervasive influence of drug trafficking and ongoing instability contributes to the chaotic atmosphere of the busy, noisy streets. This is the environment in which 8-year-old Diego is growing up—a burden far too heavy for his small shoulders.

At home, things were not good at all… My mother was always tired and worried, and that made me feel alone and scared.”

Hunger and fear were his constant companions. Between scattered beer cans and avoided arguments, Diego asked himself a question no child should ever have to ask: “Was our life always going to be like this? I didn’t know what to expect from the future.”

Light finally broke through the darkness of Balcones del Sur!

On an ordinary day, in the midst of a reality usually marked by deep shadows, Diego saw a group of children surrounding some adults who were handing out colorful books with a robot and two happy children on the cover. It was the Superbook Book of Hope.

What began as curiosity turned into a divine encounter. Diego accepted the invitation to discipleship—a time to explain and study the stories in the book he had received. In fact, he remembers how the first lesson, centered on purpose, radically impacted his heart. He learned that Jesus was not just a storybook character, but someone real who loved him then and loves him deeply today, forever.

“I began to feel peace in my heart and understand that God is always with me, no matter how difficult things seem. Since then, my life has not been the same!”

In discipleship, the Gospel gradually took on a life of its own, explained with a love that made him feel seen and valued for the first time. That crucial lesson on purpose was the switch that ignited his faith. Diego was no longer a victim of his circumstances, but a protagonist in God’s plan! He understood that his name was written in heaven and that, for Jesus, he had always been a priority.

A Miracle of Family Restoration

Diego’s transformation became the engine that ignited a new light in his entire home. His mother, moved by the radiant joy she now saw in her son’s eyes, decided to seek that same comfort; she found in the church the relief her weary soul so desperately needed. But God’s love went much further, proving that nothing is impossible for Him: in an amazing response to the constant prayers of a child who stood firm in faith, his father finally returned home to restore what seemed lost.

Those deep wounds caused by alcohol and loneliness have been healed, and the fears that once paralyzed the family have vanished in the presence of a God who provides for his studies and cares for every detail of their daily bread. Today, that little boy who used to walk in fear through the streets of Puebla stands up with unshakable conviction to serve in the worship ministry, declaring with his life that God is his true Father—the one who never fails and who always walks by his side.

A Testimony of Victory

Diego no longer walks through the streets of Balcones del Sur with his head down. He knows he has a purpose and a Heavenly Father who backs him up.

“This is my testimony: God gave me hope when I needed it the most, and now I know that He is always by my side.”

Where darkness is overwhelming, Christ’s love still shines!
