How a Boy in Rural Brazil Found Hope Through God’s Word

In the remote community of Minguiriba, nestled deep within the wilderness of Ceará, Brazil, a young boy named Nailton was known for his wild streak. Just nine years old, Nailton was bold, defiant, and quick to get into fights. He was especially proud of his skill with a baladeira, a slingshot used to pelt and hurt small animals.

But all of that began to change when a missionary started making weekly visits to Nailton’s rural community. Far from the city and often forgotten, this ranching village was suddenly home to a weekly children’s meeting centered on OneHope’s Book of Hope, a Scripture-engagement program that shares the story of Jesus in a way children and youth can understand.

Curious, Nailton and a group of other children started attending. Week after week, they listened to stories from the Bible, learning who Jesus is and how to have a relationship with Him. While many stories resonated with Nailton, one left a deep and lasting mark.

“I remember the story of when Jesus and the disciples were in a boat,” Nailton shared. “I learned that Jesus is my friend, my Father, and the one who created me. That’s why I shouldn’t be afraid. I also learned that we should not hurt others, not even animals.”

The lessons sank in, and Nailton began to transform. Slowly, his actions started reflecting the love and kindness he was discovering in Christ.

Back at home, his family noticed the shift immediately. Each time Nailton returned from a meeting, he excitedly recounted the Bible story he had just heard. His favorite audience? His little sister, though even the adults began to gather around to listen.

His mother, deeply moved by the change in her son, became the greatest champion for the weekly meetings. She could see the importance of having a relationship with Jesus, and how that was transforming her home.

Today, Nailton is known not for his slingshot skills, but for his heart. He’s become the boy who no longer hurts animals, who cares deeply for his friends, and who is always ready to teach others about Jesus.

From a remote corner of Brazil, Nailton’s story reminds us: no place is too far, and no child is too lost for the love of Jesus to reach.

Stories like Nailton’s are happening all over the world. Share this one to spark more hope, more transformation, and more Gospel impact.
