From Dark Magic to Light in Christ

In the northwest region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Africa lies Équateur Province. Though full of beautiful forests and rivers, life there isn’t easy. Many residents lack access to basic infrastructure like roads, schools, or hospitals. Even with these challenges, the people remain strong and full of hope. They hold on to their culture, their faith, and their deep love for the land.

It was in one of Équateur’s small communities that Aïcha was born. Her life began with a complex mix of faiths and traditions. Her father was Muslim, her mother Christian, but the home they tried to build together eventually fell apart. Her father left for another woman, abandoning Aïcha, her siblings, and their mother to face poverty and struggle on their own.

Amid this uncertainty, Aïcha was raised by her grandmother, an influential figure in the family and a practitioner of traditional magic. From a young age, Aïcha was initiated into pagan rituals and taught to rely on spiritual forces that promised protection and control but often brought confusion and fear.

These practices shaped the way Aïcha saw the world, the way she understood power, and the way she sought security. She could do things that amazed and frightened people, such as picking fruit from a tree just by opening her hand, turning herbs into money, and even disappearing and traveling outside her body through astral projection. Many saw her as gifted, but her mother was deeply afraid. She began searching for help from different prophets and churches, but nothing seemed to work.

Everything began to change when 16-year-old Aicha joined a Club of Life—a local, church-led discipleship group. There, she was introduced to the Book of Hope and God’s Big Story, a set of Scripture-based stories tracing God’s redemptive plan from creation to Christ.

As she listened to each story unfold, something stirred inside her. The narratives were unlike anything she had heard before. They spoke of a God who didn’t demand rituals to be appeased, but who offered love freely; a God who saw the broken, the poor, the abandoned, and called them precious. For the first time, Aïcha felt something shift in her heart. She began to see the truth about the power she was using and the darkness it brought into her life.

Each week, as she gathered with others in the Club of Life, Aïcha found herself beginning to believe. The stories weren’t just ancient tales; they were speaking directly into her life. They gave her language for her pain and a vision of hope she had never considered. After one of the sessions, a youth worker invited her to their home. That personal time, filled with love and care, made a deep impact.

With tears in her eyes and courage in her heart, Aïcha made a decision that would change everything: she gave her life to Jesus and renounced her past.

Today, Aïcha is a radiant testimony of transformation. No longer held captive by fear or confusion, she is growing in her faith with boldness and joy. She is a committed member of the Club of Life, where she continues to learn, grow, and encourage others.

Now regularly attending church in the province’s capital city of Gemena, she lifts her voice in praise as part of the worship team, her songs echoing a freedom and peace she once thought impossible.

More than just a singer, Aïcha has become a messenger. In her neighborhood, at church, and even in her own family, she speaks openly about the love and power of Jesus. Her words bring light, and her presence creates harmony where there once was division.

Aïcha’s story is a reminder that even in the most remote and difficult places, transformation is possible. It begins with a story, continues through community, and grows through faith. She is living proof that light can still break through the darkness.

Share Aïcha’s story and inspire others to believe that transformation is possible through the power of God’s Word.
