Tucked into the hills of western Belize, near the Guatemalan border, San Ignacio is a vibrant town where history, tourism, and tradition intertwine. While surrounded by lush rainforests and ancient Mayan ruins, the town’s young people are navigating modern realities such as financial insecurity and the constant buzz of social media.
Elena, a young college student, found herself battling a quiet but persistent struggle: anxiety.
“As a college student, I often feel overwhelmed by stress and anxiety,” Elena shared. “Academic pressures and social expectations sometimes make me lose sight of what really matters.”
That’s when she came across a video from the LUMO Project, a OneHope Youth Film that visually presents Scripture. This specific video was on Matthew 12:22-34, focused on the theme of anxiety. In it, Jesus reminds His listeners not to worry about their lives, but to trust God’s provision.
“The images of the birds of the sky and the lilies of the field, combined with the comforting words of Jesus, made His message take on a new life for me,” she said.
Watching Jesus speak so gently about anxiety made the message feel personal to Elena. This was a turning point.
She began practicing daily gratitude, intentionally reminding herself of the blessings God had already given her. Instead of letting anxiety define her days, Elena started seeking ways to manage stress that aligned with her faith.
But her transformation didn’t stop with her.
Motivated by the peace she had found, Elena launched a discussion group at her church, creating a space where other young people could talk openly about their worries and explore the teachings of Jesus together.
“It has been an incredible space for growth and mutual support,” she said.
What started as a personal breakthrough became a ministry of its own. Elena began using her voice to encourage others, not only in person but also on social media, sharing hope-filled messages rooted in Scripture to reach even more of her peers.
“Lumo’s video has been a powerful tool in my spiritual journey. It taught me that, even in the modern age, the teachings of Jesus are profoundly relevant and can offer true peace in the midst of our hectic lives.”
Elena’s story is a reminder of what happens when God’s Word comes alive and speaks directly to the heart of someone in need. Her story reflects the heartbeat of OneHope: to help the next generation find peace, purpose, and hope in Christ through His Word.
